Paul McCartney - Dance Tonight

(originally posted to livejournal  @ 2007-06-06 14:03:00)
Current mood: chipper

music is perfect though I swear it's been nicked from some off the radar non mainstream twee pop band, Lyrically it's a bit of fluff but there's nothing wrong with that sometimes, shame he no longer has the voice for it.

video - classic goofy begining, the ghosts dancing arround are allright until it turns 80s/early 90's ultra wackiness - Refridgerater & washing machine ghosts with food & washing hasnging off their clothes (wtf?) looking like somebodies trying to remake Rentaghost - that was bad enough the first time round.
good ending - the band in the box with costumes nearly but not quite works (reminds me of British Sea Power for some reason)
if the whole video was closer to the darker section with the washing machine on fire & Paul being sucked into the box it would be better.

great for grinning like an ideot and singing along changing the lyrics to "everybodys going to dance tonight, eveybody knows this song is shite" - everybodys going to dance around, everybodys going to hit the ground wtf? (somebody couldn't think of a decent rhyme)

If this was an genuininly eccentric genuininly indie band dressing up & acting the parts themselves they'd probably get away with it.

band review: The Hush Sound

(originally posted on livejournal 2007-05-07 20:30:00)
Current mood: curious

triggered by a post on mylot

http://www.myspace.com/thehushsound

I'm checking them out on myspace now - if we had smileys here I'd be posting a great big grin to show my reaction to We Intertwined
just triggered a bout of dancing round the room - and it's just calling out for air drums.
I hear a bit of ELO Mr. Blue Sky in the drums/piano rythm
another song I can't place.
there's another band they sound like on this song also in the genre of catchy goofy indie pop but I can't work out who.
I don't really like Panic! or Fall Out boy much but this lot sound good.
Don't Wake Me Up - sweet serious female vocals then the quirky music & male singers kick in
suggestion of Ben Folds Five and the Beatles (have you seen the little piggies)

Wine Red - instant attention grabbing start from the female singer "Who shot that arrow in you throat? Who missed the crimson apple?" witchy vibes to the tune
shame her vocals then start sounding sterotypically PATD!/Fallout Boy (pseudo)emo
but sort of redeemed by the heavy piano and guitar that comes in and the boys - shame they sound like Maroon Five.  Alright song but would be much better with more origanall/less whiny vocal melody.
Momentum - tender ballard/love song deep vocals bit cliched emo lyrics  "you are the scar on my tissue "
like this one music still good when it gets rockier (nice piano)
if only the vocals were more heartfelt not somebody trying to be Editors, but failing & just ending up like Blink 182 I miss you.

Oh Laura - Release Me*

I am the wilderness locked in a cage
I am a growing force you kept in place
I am a tree reaching for the sun please don't hold me down
Please don't hold me down

currently listening to it on a loop
meant to look for it after briefly catching the saab advert once and a mention on radio one that it was on their website,
thanks to moneysavingexpert I found it.

that advert is beautiful - looks like it's going to be like one of the save the environment/anti polution ones from the early 90's (shame it isn't)
You can watch it and download the mp3 here http://www.saab.co.uk/main/GB/en/index.html [eta: download link is probably long dead, not sure if they've still got the advert up]
(shame saab don't credit the artist &/or link to their site -  too busy plugging their car.)

a bit of digging on google for the lyrics found this blog -http://koko.pelli.co.uk/
reading it while listening to the song moved me to tears

Laura - Release me

I am the wilderness locked in a cage
I am a growing force you kept in place
I am a tree reaching for the sun please don't hold me down
Please don't hold me down

I am a rolling wave without the motion
A glass of water longing for the ocean
I am an asphalt flower breaking free
But you keep stopping me

Release me

Release me
I am the rain that's coming down on you
That you shielded yourself from with a roof
I am the fire burning desperately
But you're controlling me
Release me
Release me

Isn't Stay a lost Pink Floyd classic?

(originally posted to livejournal2007-04-24 00:32:00)

Current mood:  mellow
Current music: Pink Floyd

even if it is about a one night stand.

Pink Floyd - Stay (from Obscured By Clouds*)

Stay and help me to end the day
And if you don't mind, we'll break a bottle of wine
Stick around and maybe we'll get one down
'cause I want to find what lies behind those eyes

Midnight blue, burning gold
A yellow moon is growing cold

I rise, looking through my morning eyes
Surpised to find you by my side
Light my brain, don't try to remember your name
To find the words to tell you goodbye

Morning dews, newborn day
Midnight blue turned to grey
Midnight blue, burning gold
A yellow moon is growing

Who says political music's dead?

Michael Franti and Spearhead - Light Up Your Lighter*

Fire, fire, fire, light up ya lighter, fire fire fire
Armageddon is a deadly day, Armageddon is a deadly way
They commin for you everyday, While Senators on holiday

The Army recruiters in the parking lot, Hustling kids there jugglin pot
Listen young man, Listen to my plan , Gonna make you money, gonna make you a man

Bom Bom

Here’s what you get, An M-16 and a Kevlar vest
You might come home with one less leg,
But this thing will surely keep a bullet out of your chest

So Come on Come on, Sign up, Come on
This one’s nothing like Vietnam
Except for the bullets, Except for the bombs,
Except for the youth that’s gone

So we keep it on, til ya coming home, Higher and Higher
Fire, fire, fire, light up ya lighter, fire fire fire, so we keep it on
Til ya commin home, higher and higher
Fire, fire, fire, light up ya lighter, fire fire fire

Tell me President tell if you will,
How many people does a smart bomb kill
How many of em do you think we got,
The General says we never miss a shot
And we never ever ever keep a body count,
we killin so efficiently we can’t keep count
In the Afghan hills the rebels still fightin,
Opium fields keep providin
The best heroin that money can buy
and nobody knows where Osama bin hidin
The press conferences keep on lyin like we don’t know

Some say engine engine number nine,
Machine guns on a New York transit line
The war for oil is a war for the beast,
the war on terror is a war on peace
Tellin you they’re gonna protect you,
Tellin you that they support the troops
Don’t let them fool you with their milk and honey,
No they only want your money
One step forward and two steps back,
Why do veterans get no respect
PTSD and a broken back,
Take a look at where your moneys gone seen
Take a look at what they spend it on
No excuses, No illusions

Light up ya lighter

something I posted elsewhere for Peel day (13/10/2006)

(originally posted on a message board or two and on livejournal)

thanks to Peel for his Radio Times column (my first exposure to him), the good parts of Home Truths (there were some, honest ) and being resposible for me hearing (and in some cases actually getting) Shipbuilding (Robert Wyatt), Chumbawamba (my first real awareness of them beyond Tubthumping and the other commercial radio freindly songs) - both via the Peelenium.

The Ramones (I Wanna Be Sedated is still my favourite Ramones song), a happy hardcore/"trash techno" version of Without You, Half Man Half Biscuit (first song I heard on his show - was their Turn a Blind Eye), Captain Beefhart live, the White Stripes covering Beefhart (off an obscure vinyl single before most of the world had heard of them) better than a rebroadcast arround the same time 60's Beefhart session that somebody had taped off the radio at the time and sent back to him (it was shit), the White Stripes live at Peel Acres. The Fall - did he play Mark E Smith talking word thing (IIRC had somebody reporting seing vision and the repeated comment about how they weren't dreaming or stoned) or was that someone else?
getting to hear The Blossom Toes, My White Bicycle, & Syd/floyd (Astrominy Domine) in the late 90's/early 00's (part of a feature of playing songs from his last perfumed garden show), various dub/reggae records including Armageddion Time(non-clash), Tram, Jeffrey Lewis, Jeff Mills...

Songs that sounded better at the wrong speed, songs that sounded wrong at both speeds, songs that were just plan wrong (Abba in Hindi anyone? )
and that's just what I remember - and I was only listening from arround July '98 to October 04.

Mike Oldfield loves horses best of all the animals, they're his friends

just been listyening Mike Oldfield - On Horseback (Ommadawn* cd bonus track [eta: at least on the version I have] ) on a loop - made me laugh out out repeatedly.

mumbled poetry (sounds a bit like Peel ) incredible tweeness, singing children and silly lyrics - is this the most rediculus song ever?

"Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space."

full lyrics

I like beer, and I like cheese
I like the smell of a westerly breeze
But what I like more than all of these
Is to be on
horseback.

Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space.

I like thunder, and I like rain
And open fires, and roaring flames.
But if the thunder’s in my brain,
I’d like to be on horseback.

Some like the city, some the noise
Some make chaos, and others, toys.
But if I was to have the choice,
I’d rather be on horseback.

Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space.

Some find it strange to be here,
On this small planet, and who knows where.
But when it’s strange and full of fear,
It’s nice to be on a horseback.

Some are short, and others tall,
Some hit their heads against the wall.
But it doesn’t really matter at all,
When you happen to be on horseback.

Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space.

So if you you feel a little glum,
To Hergest Ridge you should come.
In summer, winter, rain or sun,
It’s good to be on horseback.
Hmph!

Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space.

Hey and away we go
Through the grass, across the snow
Big brown beastie, big brown face
I’d rather be with you than flying through space.

I’d rather be on horseback.

now playing -
Q's Ultimate Songwriters covers comp. Joe's Redemption Song just perfectly segued into Josh Rouse's warm, tender, and sad (esp the whispered bits) americana re-invertion of Straight To Hell
musically along the same lines as The Velvet Underground's Sunday Morning

from the cd notes -
"recorded and broadcast live from The Village Studios in Los Angeles on 89.9 KCRW's Morning Becomes Ecletic with Nic Harcourt on 27 August, 2003"

(several songs later) Kathryn Williams version of All Apologies sounds so beautiful and positive it makes the lyrics even sadder.

on the other hand - The Flying Burrito Brothers' Wild Horses just sounds whiny compared with the Stones'

(was) Now Playing: Robb Johnson - The Day We All Said Stop the War

(originally posted to livejournal -  2006-09-22 22:40:00)

"We got Muslims, we got Christians, we got pagans, we got Jews, we got atheists, anarchists, socialists, we even got a Liberal or two, we got pensioners, we got pushchairs, we got the actress & the bishop, we got respectable housewives from suburbia who've never done this sort of thing before, with the International Sex Workers of the World united, on the day we all said Stop The War." (can't find the full lyrics online)

making me feel sad because of his/the songs belief of the power of all these diverse people coming together to achive something

instead the day we (I couldn't go but wanted to - now I'm glad I didn't) all got totally fucking ignored & exploited/used by the SWP and religious fundamentalists.

To the tune Of I Shot The Sherif (Bob Marley not the Enoch Powell supporting hipocrital racist bigot Eric Clapton - confession I like his version of ISTS insert embarresed/ashamed smiley here)

"I shot Menezes in the name of National Defence, ooh, ooh-ooh
I shot Menezes and they say that I committed no offence, ooh, ooh-ooh

Sheriff Ian Blair has defended me
For dealing the killer blow
Every time that I ask for instructions
He say, “Kill him before he explodes”
“Cos you never know what's underneath his clothes”"

Midnight Oil are actually pretty f**king decent! US Forces is a great track - musically and lyrically. Shame that Beds Are Burning is the (eta: only) song of theirs that I've heard get played - great politics - (eta2: but) not much of an enjoyable listen.

it was hearing this on a relatively mainstream corperate owned online radio station (and wanting a permament copy of Billy Bragg's - The Price Of Oil after downloading it) that made me buy this cd.

When the world falls apart some things stay in place

"And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort that war takes away
And when there wasnt a war he left her anyway"

(edited to add)

youtube video

stunning live version complete with Billy facepalming (ah bless) at a wonderfuly terrible mishearing of the opening line 'with the money from her accident she bought herself a mobile phone'! lol - clip looks like it's off a live video/dvd release?

full lyrics: (eta2: corrected from listening to the actual song)

"With the money from her accident
she bought herself a mobile home,
so, at least she could get some enjoyment
out of being alone
No one could say that she was left up on the shelf
It's you and me against the world kid she mumbled to herself

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs tears run down his face

She ran away from home in her mothers best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort that war takes away
And when there wasn't a war he left anyway

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs tears run down his face

Norman Whitfield and Barratt Strong
Are here to make right everything that's wrong
Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you

And(then?) one dark night came home from the sea
he put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together
they left her heart in pieces on the
floor

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
she takes off the Four Tops tape and puts it back in its case
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi stubbs tears..."
